Social and political attitudes towards privacy and the role of business are evolving rapidly. In the face of these changes, many are developing and marketing new digital solutions that involve privacy-enhancing technologies to keep pace. One of the most promising is the use of trusted execution environments, which offer both the benefits of leveraging large data sets without the need to share user information amongst different companies or risk the data’s use outside of the context in which it was collected. Together with confidential computing and matching, these solutions provide a new privacy-enhanced pathway for businesses to embrace. This presentation will provide an overview of this and other PETs in the same space, and detail how it can be used to balance privacy and utility for the internet ecosystem.
